Frequently Unasked Questions

Please feel free to comment to this page and ask questions! They may be added to this page depending on the perceived relevance to the general playerbase.
  1. All the basics ("everything you need to know")
  2. Applications
  3. World and character mechanics
  4. Theme

ALL THE BASICS

  1. Multiversal jamjar, fantasy/sci-fi theme, where all canons were diverted by the same cross-dimensional apocalypse event. Your characters are here seeking sanctuary and/or to save all the worlds.

  2. Character-driven, plot is optional but should be fun. ICly, emotions and close CR are required; shipping is not required but encouraged.

  3. Setting includes
    • a mystical, sometimes dangerous forest;
    • a futuristic green city, where most violence is prevented by unnatural physics;
    • plot-related trips around the multiverse.
  4. Multiple versions (maximum 2) of the same canon character can be apped. They must be from different canon points or one must be CRAU.

  5. Check-in occurs every 2 months. You will be asked to briefly summarize what your character has been doing, then link 1 thread started in that span of time (log or network), with at least 3 comments.

  6. Why do the creators consider this a musebox and not a game?

Given the lack of standardized, denotative definition for either term, we went with 'musebox' due to its connotations and homage to Eudio in its early years. We consider it a musebox because we are exceptionally liberal with headcanon, have a simple app, emphasize character-driven interactions, and there is no metaplot that mandates participation; you have the option of playing a bubble. However, some structure is necessary because all of the RP happens in one shared continuity with a tiny IC population. Hence we have setting information, open events, limits on destructive powers, and mod interest in socially destructive events. Additionally, we do our best to prevent OOC mistreatment, misunderstandings, or unsafety in general. Because of this, we have applications, AC, and guidelines on how to treat one another and handle offensive material.

If you would not do x or y thing in another game or musebox without asking, please ask. We can always use more questions in the FUQ. Either your fellow players have been wondering about it too, or your needs are so unusual that it's worth discussing.

  7. Why is this now a game not a musebox?

People got Hella confused. Fuck it.

APPLICATIONS

  1. How should I handle apping into an existing cast?
Players should consider introducing themselves to players of close canon CR before they app. However, this is only required in the case of a group application (castmates arriving together from the same version and canon point of their world), or if you are apping the second version of an existing canon character. The purpose of this is not to mandate approval, but to initiate and encourage intra-cast communication.

  2. Are D.E.S.T.I.N.Y. agents appable?
Not at the current time. The application page describes what is appable and not. A summary of appable characters:
✔ CRAU, or characters who have experienced life in other games/museboxes (see below for 'partial CRAU' concerns)
    ✔ Original characters
    ✔ Canon characters
    ✔ Non-human characters

  3. How about antagonistic characters or those that cause apocalypses in storylines?
Mixed and negative CR is welcome, and ICly, F.A.T.E.S. can utilize those types of interactions as processing power just as easily as ships and positive CR. As for characters who cause apocalypses, they are generally welcome, but the player should put thought into how they regard D.E.S.T.I.N.Y. Are they jealous that the 'wrong' apocalypse is happening? Are they ambivalent toward D.E.S.T.I.N.Y. due to nihilism? As long as they are not active proponents of the enemy, that is currently acceptable!

  4. How many characters can I play?
Four, at the moment. Only one character can be apped in per calendar month. We move to rolling applications on October 1, 2017.

  5. Can I canon update my character?
Of course! There are voluntary and involuntary update options. In both cases, the character will disappear briefly from Xistentia. For more information (and sign ups), go here.

  6. Is there a 'partial' CRAU option? I'd like to app, but my character would be more fun without some of their baggage.
'Partial CRAU' is not allowed, but if you apply in fresh, you will be able to obtain memories of CRAU during special events. These will be integrated into plot quite regularly.

WORLD AND CHARACTER MECHANICS

  1. How do characters get to Xistentia? Are they drawn in against their will or do they ICly find it?
Characters leave their world voluntarily but under duress, because of the apocalypse event occuring there. They may or may not have some ideas about the destination world, but inevitably, no one expects Xistentia to be what it is. Only upon arriving do they discover the forest and the city, and learn that they can heal their world by living and taking missions here.

  2. How do characters acquire amenities? Clothing, food, etc.?
There are multiple ways to acquire any goods and resources! Characters can make their own, barter with others, or scavenge from the unpopulated parts of the city with the guidance of their daemon. With regard to scavenging, desired items seem to magically 'spawn' basically whenever characters want them, sometimes even in places that the characters have been before. However, it is never right before the character's eyes; they have to hunt a little. Often, this is easier when one has a companion.

  3. What happens if my character dies?
They stay dead, barring magical intervention from played characters or technology yet to be discovered in the story. Resurrection machines will not be found soon. Try not to die.

  4. What happens if my character is grievously injured?
Advanced technology is available through hospital and medical buildings to analyze and repair bodily damage to characters of all types, organic or otherwise. Regardless of the state of the building, these machines will work. Generally these look like complex, flat beds that radiate a glow onto the character's body and operate in 1-3 hour sessions. Note that this is not an instantaneous process. A cleanly broken bone will take 2 visits over the course of a week, with a few days in between for the body to adjust to the process. It is painless but necessary before the next step. The most severe injuries, including limb regeneration, take 1 month. Only injuries incurred in this game can be fully regenerated.

Prosthetics are also available. Contact the mods for more information.

All of these medical machines work best if another character is present to provide support, though they do not need to like each other.

  5. What if my character is immortal, can regenerate/post-mortem? What if they are invulnerable? Will such powers be nullified?
Immortality is permitted and will generally not be nerfed; likewise, regeneration and resurrection are also permitted. Such powers imply the character can temporarily be bested in a plot situation. In contrast, absolute invulnerability is unlikely to be approved, and in-game factors will more likely be able to suppress it for event purposes.

  6. What happens if a character were to attempt to attack, destroy, or otherwise harm their daemon?
The daemon will behave as any loyal animal or friend that wishes to survive, defending itself but stopping short of harming the character. It may flee once but not twice if attacked again. If the daemon is killed, the character will experience a 2-7 day period of disorientation, where Xistentia feels slightly less real, the memories of their old world feel more present (both positive and negative), and they have mild to moderate difficulty remembering their date, location (i.e., within the city), and what they're doing (e.g., going to get groceries). After this period, a new daemon will be provided to them. The first replacement may be similar to the first— however, if more are deliberately destroyed, the replacements become inanimate objects (with plots potentially resulting in daemon upgrades). If the daemon is spared, it will behave warily and be able to discuss its subjective experience of terror and pain if asked.

  7. Does my character know it's part of a computer program?
Yes. On arrival, their daemon would have explained their circumstances, and how crucial your character is to saving the Multiverse, and their own world. While they wouldn't immediately know everything there is to know - especially if they're not tech-savvy - they will be told that their own world is under attack, and Xistentia is the only place where they can hope to restore the Multiverse.

  8. Can my character go home?
Not easily, no. There is no simple, open system for the supercomputer to have open access to the rest of the multiverse without risking infecting more worlds with D.E.S.T.I.N.Y. agents. Exceptions will take place in missions, which you can either wait for or request.

  9. Are there NPCs?
Yes, there are nameless background, sentient NPCs, who are travelers just like the Player Characters. Every time new PCs arrive, an influx of these NPCs occurs too. The game is not about these NPCs. Their primary function is to explain why economic and urban development, etc., can take place. These NPCs are generally individuals from a world like contemporary IRL, from various cultures, with roughly our level of technology.

  10. Can new technology be built from beach scraps (e.g., wrecked ship parts, etc.)?
The beach is cleared of scraps within a few days of each new "crash," but these pieces can be scavenged before cleaning, or bartered from other collectors in the city. Please submit a request here on this page.

THEME INFORMATION

  1. Where is the setting information?
    Here.

  2. Is this a sex game?
This is a very sexy, optionally action-adventure apocalyptic character-building CR-oriented game. Sex is not required, but emotionally intimate relationships are ICly emphasized and OOCly core to the theme.

  3. What are the themes and inspirations here?
"What is reality?" "What is consciousness/the soul?" Destiny vs fate (connotative). The possibility that technology can exist in harmony with or even save nature. War is shitty. Death is inevitable, and life prevails. Nothing truly ends. No person is unique and every being is utterly unique; nothing and everything you do matters. Redemption comes unexpectedly. Computer viruses are the worst. The dream argument. Big Brother (even F.A.T.E.S. is a little shady that way)! Natural vs artificial is a false dichotomy. You may also enjoy the movies—
    • The Matrix
    • Tron (the newest one, sorry real fans)
    • Avalon
    • Reboot (animation)
    • The Hunger Games (level of technology/biology integration)

minion request

[personal profile] astralera 2017-09-09 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Era has an aetherial being that currently resides in some of her weapons - alive, but dormant atm - that had its own consciousness but not enough to classify it as its own character. It's about at the level of a daemon, actually.

When it is weak it can't make itself visible to others. Its current level of strength means it can show off its glowy angel-fairy form thing if it wants to, but it can only stay in close range of the weapon that can contain it... Unless it possesses its little wind-up doll soulstone minion thing.

Era spent weeks and weeks gathering aether, condensing it, meditating on her accomplishments to give it form and purpose. The end result was her wee aether elf child weapon thingy called an anima with the very original name of... Anima.

A list of all its dialogue is here. Its personality is similar to Era's, though it is significantly more quiet, preferring to observe and learn.

It's technically a completed side-quest character so I don't think there will ever be more about it (so sad), but if I get lucky and there is more stuff later I will let you guys know. :)

Hi! This game looks really interesting, and I was just curious whether there is an organized system for IC housing and businesses at this point in time?

Workshop/Lab & Technology

[personal profile] servomotor 2017-10-21 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Hello othermod,

Tony has been gradually working on repairing his jet that he arrived with, and working on getting himself a workshop up and running. I would like to formally request that he's found a space for that at this point and gathered/bartered scraps and materials, possibly with help from others (e.g., Shepard and Peter Parker). In the next few months, I also propose that he will be developing the facility to have smithing/fabrication and computers somewhat more advanced than what he had to work with in captivity in the Iron Man initial movie, if not nearly as advanced as his home lab in California depicted in latter day movies. I figure he can make highly precise cuts and pieces and accomplish quite a bit of basic chemistry, but certainly!! fabricating new elements will be beyond him for awhile.

APART FROM THAT I'd also like to ask that he have nabbed several parts from/the street lamps around the city, to break down and analyze their energy siphoning properties. He's going to try to rig technology that can convert these obscure energy outputs from superpowered beings (e.g., Nico and Shepard should they consent) into heat/light/kinetic energy. No long-term project/ultimate product in mind yet, just seeing if he can figure out the wave structure/whatever involved using his super science smrts please and thank!

There is every possibility I am missing this somewhere in the FAQ/app pages, but is there an official stance on the wait period for apping characters from possible spoilery-points in a canon? I'm...assuming I'd be safe since the character I'm considering's canon has been out in the US for six months BUT if nothing else I wanted to make sure it's noted somewhere?

Question: Antagonist characters

[personal profile] houmonka 2017-11-10 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
If I app in a character who's been coerced to work for D.E.S.T.I.N.Y., is there any possibility of them leaving (e.g. they discover that they prefer their chances at successfully saving their homeworlds by joining up with the resistance) or are their souls forfeit forever?

I'm mainly looking at It is likely that your character will be detected and caught some time in 6 months of gameplay and weighing options of how a character might continue to interact with other characters after being discovered.

Thank you!

hi mods, i had an idea that i wanted to run by you guys!!

so where joker came from he was a combat correspondent, which basically means he wrote articles for military newspapers and magazines about military activity in vietnam, and i was thinking about having him start up a similar thing in xistentia. it'd be sort of like a bulletin with pertinent info about the war, but also some CR builders like a lonely hearts column, advertising, and space for other players to have their characters write articles and such. obviously those things would depend on ic opting in, so if this is cool with you guys i was thinking about having joker advertise it on the network to see who'd be interested.

if so, it could work as a job too, with joker as the editor, and so i'd probably head over to the businesses page and set up an HQ for the publication too!

i think probably a monthly publication would make the most sense, because it's far less stressful than weekly, and it gives a longer opportunity for more things to Happen and also for people to write things they might want to add.

oocly, my suggestion for formatting would be that there'd be a post where people can volunteer stuff they might want to put in. things like lonely hearts and ads would be sent to one post (for example joker's ic inbox), and then on a set date every month i'd make a post on the main ic comm where all the contributions were accumulated in the main body of the post. i'd be happy to organise this, BUT since it's a community-wide thing that might have impact over the whole game i totally understand if that would be better suited to a mod.

at the same time, this is quite a bit to handle and the mods already have so much to do, so another suggestion i have would be that the bulletin would take the form of a simple post in the comm with the basic information in the main body, and then the comments would consist of a toplevel for different categories (e.g. small articles, lonely hearts, ads), and contributors would reply to those comments to keep it organised.

another thing which would be useful for both format suggestions would be to use a channel in the discord specifically for questions etc regarding the bulletin!

of course i'd be open to other suggestions!!
