PLEASE READ:
ALLOWED CHARACTERS

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN!
Notes:
  • We now operate ROLLING APPLICATIONS that are always open. You can submit 1 character anytime in a month!

  • Our application process has become simplified due to staffing changes, please take note!

  • As apps are always open, reserves are NO LONGER REQUIRED. Please simply complete the application below and post when you are ready.

  • If two people apply for the same character, the first to post their application will be assessed. The second application will only be considered if the first is declined.

  • However, we do allow UP TO TWO versions of each character in game. The second applicant would therefore be permitted to apply for an AU version of that character if they so choose.

  • Agents of D.E.S.T.I.N.Y. or antagonist applications will open on November 4. These characters are either brainwashed (quick resolution) or coerced (slow-play resolution, long-term espionage) to help usher in the apocalypse. More information here!
Please do not link from your journal, make sure all the content is pasted into the comment(s).

OOC:

Player Name: Provide your handle
Age: Indicate you are 18+; players less than 18 years-of-age are not permitted
Contact: One or more of Plurk, PM, or Discord are needed

IC:

Character Name: Mrs. Handsome
Canon: Indicate which version if there are multiple (e.g., book to movie)
CANON POINT: Briefly describe in a sentence.
CRAU: Yes/No, please link the game/musebox the character is from
Age: Note that characters below 16 years of age should be apped with caution, as self-sufficiency/autonomy are extremely important. Heavy interdependency and neglect risks should be OOCly opt-in.
AGENT OF DESTINY: Yes/No, "Brainwashed" or "Coerced." Brainwash agents will be captured in-game and start to remember themselves within 1-2 months of play; coerced agents are knowingly helping the other side but under duress. Antagonists cannot begin gameplay until November 4, 2017, but you may feel free to apply and plot before then!
Background: Brief summary as possible, Wiki links preferred. If you wish to write your own, please us bullet points and be concise, 250-800 words. Please avoid over-describing the world or any jargon, focus more on key points in personality development (see above), changes wrought by CRAU and important CRAU relationships, and events that are likely to be regarded as offensive or sensitive material.
Powers/Abilities: Bullet list preferred. 1-400 words. Include non-human weaknesses/limits and superlative skills. Estimate numerical limits (weight, distance, speed, etc.). At the mods' discretion, destructive capacity may be scaled down based on a maximum lift of 5 tons (~2 full-sized cars).
Starting Equipment: Name your daemon, describe its form (max 50 words), and list any other items the character will be arriving with. Note highly destructive items will be controlled by metaplot. If you have critters that have powers or special abilities, please describe them briefly.
Samples: 1 required, may be from any meme, game, or setting; however, it should have been written within the last year. They should also be written from your preferred canon point.

In-Universe:

Exit Strategy: Maximum of 200 words. If your character is an agent of D.E.S.T.I.N.Y./antagonist, describe what D.E.S.T.I.N.Y. agents did to them (e.g., torture/magical brainwashing, or family held hostage/apocalypse postponed).

For non-antagonists, tell us how the D.E.S.T.I.N.Y. apocalypse and the enemy appeared in their world, then describe the technology or magic the character used to escape their world. Note any characters they are arriving with (i.e., 'group app') including usernames. This may be used for future plot, but don't worry too much about perfect consistency with your group mate/castmates/etc.— adjustments can be made later. We just want you to be thinking about it. All characters start on the beach.

Applications
Who's Allowed?

ALLOWED

✔ CRAU, or characters who have experienced life in other games/museboxes. 'Partial CRAU' is not allowed, but if you apply in fresh, you will be able to obtain memories of CRAU during special events.
✔ Original characters
✔ Canon characters who must personally appear and preferably have a speaking role in the material of the canon point (specific episodes, books, films, etc.). You cannot app a minor/supporting character and headcanon the substance of their personality, or extrapolate a character's off-screen activities from material that only their canonmates were seen in
✔ Child characters (see Age warning in the Application section; note that self-sufficiency is important and other characters and players will not be forced to face consequences for failing to take on a dependent without careful OOC plotting)
Multiple iterations of the same canon character are allowed. The two versions must be at least one with CRAU. The current maximum is 2 of each character. This may be raised by 1 if the character exists in another form of media and is determined to be sufficiently different.
✔ Non-human characters (greatest height in all directions is 30 feet; weird genitalia is fine as long as no one has to deal with it if they don't want to)
Agents of D.E.S.T.I.N.Y., allowed as of November 4

PLEASE NO

Agents of D.E.S.T.I.N.Y., those secretly affiliated with the virus
✘ Characters who must kill sentient beings (compulsion, physical appetites/dependence, etc.); there are limited NPCs and escalating ICC may render your character unplayable

Players should consider introducing themselves to players of close canon CR before they app. However, this is only required in the case of a group application (castmates arriving together from the same version and canon point of their world), or if you are apping the second version of an existing canon character. The purpose of this is not to mandate approval, but to initiate and encourage intra-cast communication.

CHARACTER NAME: Juno Steel
CANON: The Penumbra Podcast
CANON POINT: Post-Juno Steel and the Dragon's Den just after returning to Hyperion City.
CRAU: No
AGE: 38

BACKGROUND: While these aren't described in detail, I wanted to lay down the content warnings just in case. These include alcohol abuse (by Juno's mother and by Juno himself), mentions of severe depression (both Juno and his mother), child abuse/negligence and subsequent death of a minor (Juno's mother kills his younger brother Ben when they are just children, and though we're never told how, I'm playing it safe).

Now, here's the Wiki link, but it's pretty sparse, so I've accompanied it with some of my own supplemental information for season one and season two of the podcast. I've kept it pretty bare bones, trying to stay as streamlined as possible but as I love this podcast very much I'm always willing to scream about it in detail. That being said, here are some SparkNotes.
SEASON ONE
  • Juno Steel's a detective with a lot of issues living in a neon-bathed, corrupt city on Mars, Hyperion. His caseload this season involves the numerous thefts of various ancient Martian artifacts by one Xenoanthropologist scorned named Miasma (secretly, one of the last living Martians). To help her procure these artifacts, she had hired a master thief, Peter Nureyev, who Juno runs into on one occasion early on (and kisses, yikes!)
  • During a related case, Juno swallows a Martian pill to keep it out of Miasma's hands. Said pill grants the one who ingests it the ability to read minds at the cost of bleeding out of your face holes and creating a tumor in your frontal lobe.
  • Not long after this incident, Nureyev turncoats on Miasma and comes to Juno, having discovered that Miasma wants to destroy all life on Mars. He aids Juno in trying to stop her from collecting another artifact, a devastatingly powerful Martian bomb, but before Nureyev and Juno can secure it, Miasma captures them both and brings them to an ancient Martian tomb.
  • Due to Juno having swallowed the Martian pill, she wants to extract data from his brain in order to replicate the tumor the pill created to give her the ability to read minds as well. She proceeds to torture both Juno and Nureyev.
  • Unluckily for Miasma, Nureyev is a master thief and breaks them both out of their prison, forcing them to fight Miasma to the death while the bomb's clock ticks down.
  • Juno tries to read Miasma's mind and loses his right eye due to the pressure caused by the mind-reading tumor in his brain. He does find out, however, that there is no way to stop the bomb. So at the last second, he traps himself and Miasma behind an airlock to minimize the bomb's blast only to discover upon detonation that this bomb was a Martian suicide weapon, never meant for genocide, but to wipe out all Martian life.
  • Miasma dies, Juno is left standing, and he and Nureyev leave the tomb and all of its secrets behind in the Martian desert, heading back for Hyperion City.
  • Once settled, Nureyev asks Juno to leave Mars with him, possibly forever, to travel the galaxy with him. Juno agrees and the pair spend one night together.
  • Just before Martian sunrise, Juno backs out of his decision, leaving Nureyev and returning to work as a detective to protect Hyperion City as much as he can.

SEASON TWO
  • The city election is coming, Juno is in a Funk and is down one eye, and Nureyev is Gone. Juno spends a lot of time this season reevaluating himself mentally and coming to terms with some of the more emotionally charged parts of his past (his mother, his depression, etc). That being said, the main plot so far has been such:
  • Enter Ramses O'Flaherty, a man who is running for mayor of Hyperion city, completely dedicated to cleaning up the streets, helping the impoverished, and wiping out the corrupt cops in the HCPD who currently work for the present criminal mayor, Pilot Pereyra.
  • Juno joins O'Flaherty's cause as both detective and bodyguard and Ramses gifts him the Theia Spectrum, a cybernetic eye that grants Juno a number of abilities. Juno wants more than anything to trust him as their goals are aligned with the good of Hyperion City.
  • Ultimately, Juno's job is to keep Ramses alive until Election Day while finding out who wants him dead, which ultimately leads him back to the place of his mother's breakdown: the very same entertainment park she was fired from.
  • And he does manage this, but not without shedding some blood, something that Juno usually isn't about. It's left him a little shaken at this point. This is a guy who always has his blaster set to "stun" when he's running and gunning, which brings us to his current canon point.
POWERS:

INVESTIGATIVE ABILITY | Despite his own attitude towards himself, stating he "spreads the mess around" rather than helps Hyperion City, his services are sought after and Juno's ability to deduce and put together clues is very much unmatched. It's definitely an ability he's earned after years of being private investigator.

BRAWLER | Juno's got a mean right hook and he's not a gentleman. He's scrappy, he doesn't play fair, and if he has to put you down he's going to try his damndest to do so. Juno's taken on opponents bigger than himself before, but doesn't have superhuman strength.

SHARPSHOOTER
| He's the best in the Martian west, enough said. When he had both of his eyes, before the Theia Spectrum, Juno was known for him quick draw and even faster shot. The best sharpshooting this side of Nowhere, essentially. Combined with the Theia Spectrum enhancing his sight, Juno's shooting is vastly improved, firing off rounds with deadly accuracy in seconds.

THE THEIA SPECTRUM | after the destruction of Juno's eye, Ramses O'Flaherty played patron to Juno and outfitted him with a brand new robotic eye that has a number of different modes, some of which are still undiscovered. It has night vision capabilities, the ability to read lips & calibrate the voices of their owners through sight, and a recording mode that can be connected to an upload link. It is also a precision weapon in that it aids Juno in shooting lightning fast rounds from his blaster by improving his brain-to-muscle reaction time drastically.

DISNEY PRINCESS | Juno has the uncanny ability to speak /commune effectively with animals. It's weird. He speaks quite casually with Martian rabbits who (as far as we've witnessed) only communicate in very indistinct animal grunting and snuffling noises (negotiating directions in exchange for a ten cred bill). It's weird. He's weird.

STARTING EQUIPMENT:
⇒ A long trenchcoat + clothing (right image)
⇒ The Theia Spectrum (an implanted robotic eyeball)
⇒ A blaster and 6 cartridges for it
⇒ His comms unit
⇒ Wallet (contains ID, some business cards, 20 creds)
⇒ A daemon named "DAHLIAD" who takes the shape of a white peacock and has an incredibly saucy attitude. Dahliad speaks with a questionable mid-tone voice that can't quite be placed in a specified gender range and it fluctuates, sometimes pitching high and sometimes pitching low.

SAMPLES: action/log w. tin can, i mean iron man and if that doesn't do it for you, here's a text thread w. darlene as a back up.

IN-UNIVERSE:

EXIT STRATEGY: Juno was cornered by some red armor-clad D.E.S.T.I.N.Y. agents when he got back to his office in Hyperion City after his most recent case. Cue a huge shoot out. Towards the tail-end of the fight, backed up against a window, Juno had two choices: he could be pinned down or he could take his chances falling out the window. Out of sheer spite, the Juno Steel Way (TM), he threw himself off the ledge, middle fingers up, and instead of landing (painfully) on the pavement, he fell into one of those really convenient portals that all the cool kids are falling into these days, which brought him here.
