CHARACTER NAME: John "Thunderbird" Proudstar CANON: The Gifted (TV) CANON POINT: Beginning of 1x12 "eXtraction," while Johnny and his closest teammates are out on a mission with the Frost sisters and HQ is under attack without them; Blink has not yet kissed him CRAU: No AGE: 34 years (extrapolating from PB age) AGENT OF DESTINY: Yes, Brainwashed/Sleeper agent BACKGROUND:
Not much is established in TV canon for Thunderbird. To all indication, he grew up on the Apache reservation wanting to do his father proud. Extrapolating from related film timelines, it seems likely that his brother, Warpath, was also part of his life on the reservation. He followed in his father's in joining the US Marines, possibly as part of a mutant unit. He served in combat in Afghanistan. After leaving the service, he tried to help raise money for the humans injured by mutant powers in the 7/15 riots. During this charity work, he as well as human servicemen and civilians came under attack of a home-made bomb thrown by an anti-mutant, and he protected people from likely injury or death. At some point following that experience, he helped to found the Mutant Underground. With this new mission, he helps mutant refugees illegally escape from growing hostilities from the American political climate-- while struggling not to answer the increasingly violent human judicial system in kind. The mission has come first for him, and he chose the work over his romantic relationship with Sonja ("Dreamer").
His canon point finds him at a time when it is growing more and more difficult to resist human supremacy without resorting to killing. Coerced by the Frost sisters, who have less in the way of such hangups, he is starting on a mission to capture a scientist and senator responsible for the torture, exploitation, and deaths of other mutants.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Most of Thunderbird's weaknesses are fairly standard for humans, albeit reduced by his mutant abilities. In general, he needs to eat, breathe, and is susceptible to typical emotional reactions. In terms of powers, much of it comes down to his mutagenic muscular-skeletal system. He has
Superstrength: He can lift about 1.5 tons, flipping a car or smashing walls fairly easily; however, he would only be able to hold up a car or such with great effort, briefly.
Durability: He can get hit by a truck without sustaining injury. Small arms fire causes him pain, but does not puncture his skin. Armor-piercing rounds and more powerful projectiles would cut and injure him.
Superspeed/reflexes: Approximately 30-40 MPH running speed. He can catch thrown knives and even flying explosive shrapnel, but not dodge bullets.
Supersenses/Tracking: With concentration, his senses canonically allow Thunderbird to track people even if they teleport for a few miles, and even perform mild feats of psychometry for areas (i.e., to tell if specific individuals snuck out of HQ recently). He can overhear conversations and tell approaching attackers for about a mile radius. Consent required.
STARTING EQUIPMENT:
"Thunderbird" daemon: Appears like an adult bald eagle with the ability to discharge electricity to the limit of a normal tazer (about 10 feet range, incapacitating but not killing amount of electricity discharge).
Clothes! Fitted T-shirt that shows off watermelon biceps, trousers, shoes.
EXIT STRATEGY: Though he does not remember it now, D.E.S.T.I.N.Y. attacks his world in the form of Hound and other military personnel dressed in red. They capture him as he sets out on his canon mission, and brainwash him into being psychically susceptible to their agenda. He is then actually released, in hopes he will lead them back to Xistentia. However, instead, he is captured and taken to Panultima as a servus class resident. His weighty sense of duty and responsibility then pegs him squarely into fulfilling the role, even if it means senseless killing, while he secretly plots for freedom.
