Aymeric and Era are approved to seek out the unicorn hair!
After interviewing around various residents who have gone exploring, the two will learn that unicorns are off on the remotemost North edge of the visible map, even further than the peninsula, right up against the strange wall of light that demarcates the end of the known 'world' of Xistentia. They basically retreated further and further from the city ever since the first wave of people arrived.
There's a collection of lore, which may or may not be accurate, about the unicorns of Xistentia. Here we present you the players the facts, and you can decide which errors they make if any:
Some stories suggest they are only slightly more intelligent than humans, but those of Xistentia have an intuitive understanding of most sentient languages and are roughly as intelligent as humans
Very long-lived, though not actually immortal as suggested by some
May be tamed only by virgins; they become very docile and susceptible to influence from others. Most stories specify the virgin must identify as a woman, but this is not true. Note that older female unicorns are less vulnerable and may press their companions away
Notably, there is a rare and predatory species of heavily vined tree around Xistentia that has gotten several residents in trouble. It basically reaches out with its creepers to snare prey. And it has a particular taste for unicorns. Greater (but still low) density of creeper trees can be used to identify unicorn grazing territory, or even used to trap them (as long as you get the unicorn free before the tree pulls the animal into the trunk for digestion. Alternatively, the tree can be destroyed/chopped down and the unicorn freed as long as it is within 5 minutes!
Aymeric and Era will observe that unicorns eat vegetation and also small insects. They only drink from running water. At this season, their offspring are weaned and bigger than babies per say, but definitely not yet independent. Baby unicorns seem to be closely attached to their mother for about a year, but stay with the herd for longer.
Herds typically consist of 3-10 animals and appear to be female-dominated.
Unicorn tears, blood, and other body parts have special properties in many a storied fable, but these will not be revealed unless you indicate to us that some are collected.
Recommended scenarios:
Using either character, if they have not had sex before, to lure a unicorn then cut off locks
A tree trap may also be used! If they happen to be up at night, they'll notice that while the unicorns are sleeping, the trees can actually 'walk' very slowly and carefully around the forest, causing the landscape to change, and then be able to catch their highly intelligent prey. The trees are clearly sentient and quite dangerous themselves. But they don't exactly walk quietly, so they're usually still a quarter of a mile out from the nearest unicorn and have learned to replant near running water, tasty flowers, etc.
Your characters can accidentally a tree themselves and get into trouble. Note that if they are digested, they will be dead, so don't do that
If you need more information let us know! If/when you start the log, we'd love to see it, so please reply to this comment with a link.
